Thanks for the ID correction, Brett. I have changed it on the photo here. I actually thought it might be a Savannah because of the bright yellow "eyebrow," but wasn't sure since I think I have only seen one once before many years ago. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Curt,

Yeah, the eagle chase was quite a treat to watch and photograph. I would have been very unhappy if I hadn't had my camera at the ready.

Incredible shots, Clint, especially the eagle and osprey series. Just for the record, the first bird under Song Sparrow is actually a Savannah Sparrow.

Hi Larry,

Naomi controlled the electronic Osprey and Eagle while I took the photos :-). Thanks for the compliments. It was a fun adventure and quite amazing to be witness to the event which probably only lasted 2 or 3 minutes. The Heron nest wasn't real high and we were on a little hillock so the angle was pretty good.

Next time I go out to CA I will let you know and maybe we can meet up. Regards to Rachel!

Awesome photos Clint. What a treat!.

So, did you use radio controlled electronic Osprey and Eagle models? The shots are too perfect. You must have had two other people flying the "birds" (ha, ha) while you took the photos. And the fish! Come on Clint. I can tell it is really a gold fish out of your aquarium or something. I hope you didn't scare it too much.

Seriously! I'm jealous of what great photography you do.

How did you get high enough to get the Heron nest!!?? That is excellent!

Take care.
Let me know if you get out West.

Thanks, Hannah. Our mini-vacation was a wonderful wildlife adventure. We had lots of sunshine so it was perfect for photography.

We are very excited about our upcoming trip to see both of you and your family. I am VERY excited about the Pentangle concert as well.

See ya soon.

Love,
Clint (and Naomi)

Great pics Clint! This looks like an amazing trip with so many wildlife spotting moments. I love the American Kestrel's eyes! It's really interesting to see the heron's nest and chicks too, they look really precarious up in the tree. I don't think I've ever seen a bobolink before, what type of habitat is it found in? I'll have to look out for it next time we're over. Top of my list to spot though is an opsrey, it looks so awesome and what a sight it must have been to see the eagle and osprey fighting in mid air!

Looking forward to seeing you soon,

Mark,

I didn't hear or read anything about the Eagles at Ashokan this season. Too bad about the nest - those are such huge nests, they must take forever to build. Thanks for stopping by.

These were taken at Oakwood Cemetery by the overlook. He is there every day. I was able to get closer for these shots than I have in the past and he posed nicely for me.

Hi Paul,

The RBW and Wood Duck are so colorful this time of year. Wood Ducks are VERY shy and usually spook before I even see them; it's very difficult to get close enough to get a decent photo.

Hi Clint,

What a great wedding! How fortunate that you could attend all the way over in England. Thanks for sharing your pictures. I hope you're not getting hit too hard with so much foul weather out your way. We're get summer-like weather when we should be getting a whole lot more rain.

Yours,
John

P.S. Did you happen to hear that birds like to go to retail shops when their tails get damaged?

Gloria and Brian,

Yes, the snow photos were taken right near our house. We have been pummeled with snow this past month. We are in the middle of another big one right now. We actually just got back from England yesterday night. We went over for our son's wedding - we only got to stay for 3 days. It was a bit chilly where we were (Woking), but no snow. We got to see our first Goldfinch which is very different from our American Goldfinch and I was lucky enough to get a good photo.

Birds have been scarce around here this winter. The usual visitors have been missing. We have some at our feeders (Northern Cardinals, lots of American Goldfinches, a few Juncos, Titmice, and Mourning Doves mostly) but we don't see many others. We are also looking forward to Spring and the return of many more birds.

Thanks for keeping in touch.

Hi Clint and Naomi,
I guess these photo's were taken in New York State ? It looked exactly the same here in Yorkshire England last year, we had an exceptionally cold spell in November, with more snow than we had seen for a long time, roads iced up and unpassable, people having to dig their cars out, schools not open, airports closing, trains not running, but inspite of all that, dosn't it look beautiful !!!!
Are you finding many birds around at the moment ? we have many lakes around our area but unfortunately they are all iced over and the wildlife are heading out to the rivers as it's the only area for them to access till it thaws again. But on saying that, we are inundated with garden birds on the feeders, 3 robins all together this morning, very strange, a pied wagtail blue tits, great tits, long tailed tits, goldfinches, blackbirds, starlings, pigeons, ring necked doves, song thrush, rooks, and of course the sparrows.
We are looking forward to the spring when we can get out and about again and take their pictures. All the Best Gloria and Brian ( the university birders)

Brian and Gloria,

Thanks for you kind comments. Yes, we got the Green Jay photo at Laguna Atascosa (thanks to your recommendation). We got the Pauraque at Llano Grande. We didn’t find it ourselves, a fellow who regularly gives bird tours there gave us a short private walk and pointed it out to us. We found the Ruby-crowned Kinglet on South Padre Island. It wasn't at the main wetland area - it was down a side road. There were a few flying around some bushes. One was nice enough to show us his ruby crown.

Hi Clint and Naomi, Excellent photo's of your trip in Brownsville and surrounding areas. You deffinately got a good shot of the Green Jay eventually, much better than the ones we were seeing at the university. That was an amazing shot of the Pauraque, where did you spot that one ? also the Ruby crowned kinglet ? Brian was impressed with that one.! He also thought you had got very good shots of the parakeet and parrots, we only managed to see them in the evening around dusk so didn't get brilliant clear shots of them all.
Looking forward to seeing many more of your photo's in the near future.!!

Great photos. The first photo marked "Kiskadee" is actually a Couch's Kingbird, though the second photo truly is of a kiskadee.

Hi Clint, We have just got round to checking your site and your photographs are just brilliant !, We hope you found many more whilst in Texas, especially around the Estero Llano Park, in Brownsville, and Laguna acosta Wildlife area near South Padre Island. After leaving Brownsville we carried on up to Galveston and then to Houston before flying home to England. We are just getting accustomed to the weather back here at the moment, (Wet and Windy) quite normal for this time of year.
We shall keep an eye on your blog for your "Texas Trip"

All the best to you both, from the "university birders" Brian and Gloria.
