One good tern…and more
Naomi and I spent the 4th of July weekend camping in the Finger Lakes region of NY. Much of the time we spent exploring the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (where the photos below were taken).
Black Terns

American Kestrel

Baby Coyote (wet from swimming in the wetland waters)

Immature Bald Eagle

We were witness to an amazing Bald Eagle/Osprey interaction which I captured with my camera. An Osprey flew directly over us carrying a fish when suddenly an immature Bald Eagle swooped out of nowhere and attacked the Osprey trying to take its fish away. In the end the Osprey got away with its catch. Here is the sequence:

Bobolink

Common Moorhen

Great Blue Heron

Great Blue Heron Chicks at Nest

Great Egret

Red-winged Blackbird

Savannah Sparrow

Song Sparrow

White-tailed Bucks

White-tailed Fawn

Baby Yellow Warbler

Great pics Clint! This looks like an amazing trip with so many wildlife spotting moments. I love the American Kestrel’s eyes! It’s really interesting to see the heron’s nest and chicks too, they look really precarious up in the tree. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bobolink before, what type of habitat is it found in? I’ll have to look out for it next time we’re over. Top of my list to spot though is an opsrey, it looks so awesome and what a sight it must have been to see the eagle and osprey fighting in mid air!
Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Hannah x

Thanks, Hannah. Our mini-vacation was a wonderful wildlife adventure. We had lots of sunshine so it was perfect for photography.
We are very excited about our upcoming trip to see both of you and your family. I am VERY excited about the Pentangle concert as well.
See ya soon.
Love,
Clint (and Naomi)

Awesome photos Clint. What a treat!.
So, did you use radio controlled electronic Osprey and Eagle models? The shots are too perfect. You must have had two other people flying the “birds” (ha, ha) while you took the photos. And the fish! Come on Clint. I can tell it is really a gold fish out of your aquarium or something. I hope you didn’t scare it too much.
Seriously! I’m jealous of what great photography you do.
How did you get high enough to get the Heron nest!!?? That is excellent!
Take care.
Let me know if you get out West.

Hi Larry,
Naomi controlled the electronic Osprey and Eagle while I took the photos :-). Thanks for the compliments. It was a fun adventure and quite amazing to be witness to the event which probably only lasted 2 or 3 minutes. The Heron nest wasn’t real high and we were on a little hillock so the angle was pretty good.
Next time I go out to CA I will let you know and maybe we can meet up. Regards to Rachel!

Hi Clint,
I loved looking at your wildlife photos - - the eagle and osprey chase scene had me on the edge of my seat!!

Great shots, Clint. I love the Eagle’s pursuit. What a thrill to capture, I am sure. Great that you were prepared for it.

Incredible shots, Clint, especially the eagle and osprey series. Just for the record, the first bird under Song Sparrow is actually a Savannah Sparrow.

Thanks, Steve! And thanks for your interesting emails. I will get back to you later today on the topics you raised.

Hi Curt,
Yeah, the eagle chase was quite a treat to watch and photograph. I would have been very unhappy if I hadn’t had my camera at the ready.

Thanks for the ID correction, Brett. I have changed it on the photo here. I actually thought it might be a Savannah because of the bright yellow “eyebrow,” but wasn’t sure since I think I have only seen one once before many years ago. Thanks for commenting.
