Montezuma Wildlife Refuge
Monday, April 13, 2009 by Clint.
Yesterday was a sunny, but cold and windy, day. We decided to take a trip out to Central NY to the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge to try to get some interesting bird photos. We had read that there were several osprey there including some nesting pairs. It turned out to be a very exciting and fruitful trip. An osprey is a very large bird, almost as big as an eagle.
Our first encounter with an osprey at Montezuma was when Naomi spotted one perched on a low branch of a tree feeding on a fish. I was able to get some good close shots of this magnificent bird.

As we were leaving we saw a nest fairly high up but not far from the road. We pulled over and sat patiently watching the nest. We were very fortunate to observe one of the mates arriving and leaving. As you can see from the photos their nests are HUGE - maybe 8-10 feet in diameter and just as deep; the nest weighs many hundreds of pounds.

We observed many other species including Great Blue Herons…

And the very colorful Northern Shoveler
