Snowstorm and Bald Eagles
Monday, January 19, 2009 by Clint.
Over the weekend we had 8 to 10 inches of snow at our farm in the Catskills. Even though we have had a considerable amount of snow this winter, it was still beautiful to look at.

This is the perfect time of year to go looking for Bald Eagles around the reservoirs in the Southern Catskills where the largest population of Bald Eagles in the Eastern U.S. congregate in the winter. We saw at least 8 in flight but I wasn’t able to get any photos. Finally, we came across one perched in a tree on the other side of the creek about 100 yards away. I was able to get a few good shots of this majestic bird sitting on a branch with snow falling all around.

I was able to get some good close and detailed shots of some smaller birds as well….
Dark-eyed Junco

There were several little Red-breasted Nuthatches. They are tiny and amazing to watch as they crawl up and down the trees and branches.

And finally I captured a pair of Common Mergansers taking off from the water. I love their reflections in the water!
This is the male…you can see the trail of splashes behind him as he takes off:
And the female:
