December 11th Ice Storm
Monday, December 15, 2008 by Clint.
We had a major ice storm here the night of December 11th and extending into the morning of the 12th. I think it was the heaviest ice storm I have ever seen. It hit Troy very hard and we were without power for about 12 hours. I woke at 5 a.m. to find the power out and the basement flooded. I have lots of stuff in the basement, but fortunately very little was damaged as I had anticipated a problem. I got my small generator running and kept the sump pump going. However, the backyard looks like a bomb was dropped with large limbs and a whole big tree downed by the heavy ice. Some sections of chainlink fence were squashed, but no damage to the house. It will take some time to get it all cleaned up.
The other side to the storm was its incredible beauty. As soon as the power returned we went to the farm to spend the weekend with an old friend of mine and his wife. They came out from Oregon for a visit and were amazed by the beauty. I took lots of photos at the farm and here are a few:
This first one is a view of the hillside and brook from the living room window

And here are various shots of the icy wonderland…

And finally, a view across our frozen pond…
