Horned Larks and Rough-legged Hawks

Today was a very beautiful day to go to the grasslands of Fort Edward, NY. Although there were no owls to be seen this time there were Rough-legged Hawks and lots of little Horned Larks. The recent snow made a nice backdrop for some of the photos I took.

Horned Larks…these slightly smaller than robin sized birds hang out in groups and seem to be especially attracted to roadsides.

I believe this perched hawk is the rarer dark phase of the Rough-legged Hawk.
